What is Job-Hopping?

The word of the moment is ‘Job-hopping’. I can’t log into LinkedIn without seeing a post, article or poll about the benefits and concerns associated.

Let’s Define It

Job-Hopping refers to an employee moving onto new opportunities after only being in their job for less than a year. This is motivated by pay rises, increases in responsibilities and improved job titles.

The Pros

Job-hopping allows you to scale the corporate ladder faster, fast-tracking your career. It shows determination and ambition on the employee’s part, they’re willing to do whatever it takes to get what they want professionally. This benefits both the employee and the business (until a better offer comes along). These employees gain greater experience within a short time frame and can often offer diverse range to any company that hires them.

Also, an employee that’s consistently head-hunted and landing better opportunities are obviously highly skilled at what they do.

The Cons

Job-hopping shows a certain lack of loyalty in an employee, as a result, it can often be seen as a major red flag by employers and limit employment opportunities in the future. Employers will always know that their team members will be ready to leave the moment something better comes along, potentially decreasing the responsibility, time and coaching poured into them.

Is it worth it?

It largely depends on your values. If you’re serious about career progression and can’t wait to fast-track your goals, job-hopping was made for you. But if comfort, loyalty and being part of a team fills your cup, you should probably stay put.
